An .ESA file is the native Wilcom font file.
The fonts in the Wilcom .ESA Fonts range have been digitized specifically for Wilcom ES version 2006 and ES Studio and will not work on any earlier version or other software.
These have been digitized to make keyboard lettering.
.ESA files are not True Type Font conversions but carefully digitized files that will give you maximum quality with the convenience of keyboard lettering.
The fonts are enormously versatile allowing you to:
- Place lettering on any baseline you choose
- Change the shape of individual letters
- Nominate the stitch order
- Color individual letters
- Mix fonts
- Make changes and edits easily at any time in the future
- Auto kern
- Refine letter shapes to your preference
- Genuine closest point
- Alter connector values
The True Type font conversion on some fonts font is just not up to scratch. With wildly erratic thread direction, often causing thread breaks and at the very least excessive thread trims. (Remember True Type Fonts have been digitized for the print medium not Embroidery) The samples we have loaded are all common fonts that we use regularly. Having them readily available as - .ESA files is a huge time saver for our digitizing department. We would like to pass on the same time and savings to you.
With the powerful tools the Wilcom range has to offer along with the standard .ESA sytem fonts (click here to view the standard fonts), it does produce great standard lettering, however we wanted to take this one step further by reducing the the amount of wasted time spent manually digitizing individual characters or editing a similar font to make it match your requirement.

As time went on, it became clear that by creating our own fonts we were saving many hours and dollars, instead of digitizing individual character sets over and over again, we were able to use the created fonts within the system. If you have ever taken the time to create a digitized font from beginning to end then you will have an understanding of how important it is to get it right. You must take into considertaion the removal of unwanted trims, the correct kerning sequence values and the correct overlap sequence. If any of these are done incorrectly the end result will be less than satisfactory.
As mentioned above, the tools and quality of the Wilcom software range is excellent, however even the best software can be limited by outside factors, some of which include:
Needle sizes
Quality of threads
Backing and Underlay
the type of garment or fabric
Qualiity of origional digitizing
Size and Dimensions.
Even if you have the best machine, needles and thread, a poorly digitized font will look very ordinary. By contrast, a well digitized font with the right machine, needles and thread will allow you to produce the highest quality embroidery around.
